Unlike now, Gretzky’s original hockey outfits were wool sweaters. Due to its bulky nature, athletes rarely wanted to tuck their uniforms into their hockey pants. However, because Gretzky was a six-year-old wearing an eleven-year-old outfit, he stated in an interview that his large sweater reached his ankles.

In an interview, he also stated that he played better when his shirt was tucked.He said he had awful games and even bad months or seasons when he didn’t wear his jersey tucked. This superstition was embraced by his followers, and Gretzky eventually had jerseys created just for him. He had two logos on his shirttail, so regardless of how he tucked his jersey in, at least one would be visible.
