Career

Omokri’s prior professional experience

Despite his legal training, Omokri is better recognized professionally as a novelist, activist, preacher, and political strategist. From August 2006 until April 2011, Omokri worked as the Vice President, Africa, for Joe Trippi and Associates, a political consultancy business located in the United States. In this capacity, he assisted in the management of numerous important African leaders’ political campaigns.

The Delta-born lawyer’s entrance into Nigerian politics started in 2010 when he signed a petition signed by a group of notable Nigerians (G 57) calling for President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua’s resignation. The President was evacuated from the nation due to a health emergency and did not delegate authority to his Vice President, Goodluck Jonathan. When Jonathan became the substantive President after Yar’Adua’s death, Omokri urged several Nigerians in the Diaspora to support him in the 2011 presidential election.

Omokri’s tenure in office and big scandal

When Jonathan was elected in 2011, he named Omokri as his Special Assistant on New Media. As a result of this assignment, he essentially became one of the President’s spokespersons. He continuously supported the Jonathan administration against the avalanche of criticism and stated the government’s stance on current topics. Omokri also aggressively used social media to publicize the administration’s advances and strides, as well as to run polls to gauge Nigerians’ opinions on his principal’s performance. He held this position until May 29, 2015, when the Jonathan administration departed Aso Rock after his principal’s loss in the 2015 presidential election.

During his tenure in government, he was embroiled in various issues, the most notable of which happened in 2014, when he was accused of imitating Wendell Simlin’s identity. Omokri used the pen name Wendell Simlin in an effort to connect Lamido Sanusi, a former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), to the terrorist organization Boko Haram. The digital footprint of the story, on the other hand, identified Omokri as the author since its digital signature was similar to prior materials he had previously given to media organizations.

It was also discovered that the actual Wendell Simlin is a young man from California. Deborah Campbell, who claimed to be the boy’s mother, informed a Nigerian news site that Omokri is related since she is married to his brother-in-law. Campbell, on the other hand, demanded that the presidential assistant forgeries her son’s identity.

Reno Omokri’s career after leaving government

Omokri returned to the pulpit after leaving the government. He is presently a Pastor at the Mind of Christ Christian Centre, which is situated in the San Francisco Bay Area of California, USA. From 2015 to 2016, he hosted Transformations With Reno Omokri, a Christian teaching show that aired on Comcast, DISH Network, and Roku. He often utilizes his social media platforms to preach the gospel, debunk certain beliefs such as the prosperity gospel, and give people advice on a variety of situations, which he refers to as #RenosNuggets.

Reno Omokri is engaged in politics despite the fact that he is no longer in government. He is a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Nigeria’s biggest opposition party. He has been an outspoken opponent of the current All Progressives Congress (APC) administration, criticizing its policies and performance in office.

Omokri has basically gone into self-exile since 2015, stating that if he stays in the nation, he would be punished by the APC administration. On August 17, 2017, Omokri said that the Department of State Services (DSS), Nigeria’s secret police, tried to arrest him at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja, but he escaped. Omokri has been a political activist in various campaigns emphasizing misgovernance, corruption, and personal misery. Among the campaigns/movements in which he has participated are:

The Free Leah Sharibu campaign advocates for the release of Leah Sharibu, a Christian teenager abducted by Boko Haram. #EndSARS; #HarassBuhariOutOfNewYork; and #HarassBuhariOutOfLondon. Omokri has also had other novels published. His publications are both religious and motivating in nature.

Family

Tuokpe Omokri is Reno Omokri wife, and the pair has three children: Tosan and Misan (both boys), and Tsola (a girl). However, in May 2021, an online journal, The Will Nigeria, accused Omokri of leaving his wife and three children in California. According to the publication, he opted to continue his relationship with an Ethiopian lady named Hanna, who became pregnant for him. Hanna gave birth to a daughter, and Omokri named her Ebele in honor of ex-President Jonathan. The majority of Nigerians believed Omokri’s wife gave birth to Ebele, but Tuokpe stepped out to clarify the air and rejected rumors that she was the girl’s daughter.

Many Nigerians were taken aback by the disclosure, as Omokri, who is renowned for preaching sexual purity, reportedly abandoned his publicly known long-standing convictions to soothe his sorrows. Despite the charges being repeated by independent journalist David Hundeyin, Omokiri has not officially refuted or verified the story.
